The unique ‘Series 1’ wristwatch made by Roger Smith, with a dial customisation proposed by A Collected Man has achieved a new record for one of his watches at their auction.

1 December, 2022

The watch achieved a hammer price of £660,000, marking a new record for one of Roger’s wristwatches. If not for the unprecedented price achieved by the recent sale of the seminal Daniels Spring Case Tourbillon, this would have represented a British record.

The sale was only the second time a Roger W. Smith ‘Series 1’ has been auctioned and the chance to acquire a brand new watch of Roger’s since he closed his waiting list in 2021 was a compelling opportunity for the watch collectors from all over the world who bid on the watch during the two week auction.

Roger said;

“I am naturally interested to see how our collectors’ watches perform when they auction them. Nevertheless, a hammer price of £660,000 was a major achievement and I am extremely grateful to A Collected Man for agreeing to donate twenty per cent of their profits from this sale to the Alliance of British Watch and Clock Makers, the trade body for which I am Chairman.

The funds are earmarked for an ambitious project we are embarking on to provide careers advice and to connect horology students to the 76 British watch and clock brands we represent. It is vital that we encourage more young talent into our sector and the proceeds from this auction will go a long way to helping us to achieve that goal.”
